Questions for Woolston ward candidates (6 questions)
Question 1
If elected will you sign up to the Space for Cycling campaign?
Sue ATKINS(Trade Unionists and Socialists Against Cuts) | Yes |
Christopher HAMMOND (Labour Party)
Samuel HARRIS (Liberal Democrat)
Clive HILLMAN (Green Party) | Having read the’Space for Cycling’ proposals I can confirm I will sign up to the campaign. |
Matt JONES (The Conservative Party) | Yes |
Question 2
Are you in favour of removing road space for cars and using this for safe segregated cycle superhighways similar to London?
Sue ATKINS(Trade Unionists and Socialists Against Cuts) | Yes |
Christopher HAMMOND (Labour Party)
Samuel HARRIS (Liberal Democrat)
Clive HILLMAN (Green Party) | I am also in agreement with this essential proposal to ensure safe segregated cycle highways. |
Matt JONES (The Conservative Party) |
I am in favour of re-allocating road space from cars to bicycles in principle, however the risk of unintentionally causing significant harm is real and the merits of any scheme should be considered on a case-by-case basis. |
Question 3
Are you in favour of lowering speed limits to 20mph in some residential areas to make it safer for people to walk and cycle?
Sue ATKINS(Trade Unionists and Socialists Against Cuts) | Yes |
Christopher HAMMOND (Labour Party)
Samuel HARRIS (Liberal Democrat)
Clive HILLMAN (Green Party) | I am completely in favour of this initiative with an implementation as wide as possible. |
Matt JONES (The Conservative Party) | It has been the policy of Southampton Conservatives for some years to encourage introduction of 20mph limits where residents want them, and I continue to support this. |
Question 4
If elected what would you do to encourage cycling in Southampton?
Sue ATKINS(Trade Unionists and Socialists Against Cuts) | I would work with your campaign to implement measures that would make cycling safer and more attractive for more people in the city. |
Christopher HAMMOND (Labour Party)
Samuel HARRIS (Liberal Democrat)
Clive HILLMAN (Green Party) | This is difficult for me to be definitive on as I would need to get a better and deeper understanding of the Councils current proposals in this area. However, be assured this is an issue close to my heart (if you ride recumbent it’s also close to your butt!). I would be keen to encourage more participation from children and those who like myself are disabled as an aid to both mental and physical health. |
Matt JONES (The Conservative Party) | My first priority would be to ensure proper maintenance of our crumbling roads, which pose a real danger to cyclists. I would begin immediate consultations with residents on key cycling routes in Woolston to introduce 20mph limits in their roads. If we gain control of the Council we would introduce a one-off fund to subsidise drop kerbs, removing cars from crowded roads and creating more space for safe cycling – I would make sure Woolston residents were aware of this and encourage them to apply for it where appropriate. |
Question 5
If elected would you be in favour of allocating 10% of the local transport budget to cycling?
Sue ATKINS(Trade Unionists and Socialists Against Cuts) | Yes |
Christopher HAMMOND (Labour Party)
Samuel HARRIS (Liberal Democrat)
Clive HILLMAN (Green Party) | Again, without knowing the current budget allocations and proposal the Council hold, it would be wrong of me to give a simple answer. However, I think a progressive annual rise from current levels should be achievable. |
Matt JONES (The Conservative Party) | Yes, a share of which would be for priority maintenance of roads which are existing formal cycle routes. |
Question 6
If elected would you be in favour of a Workplace Parking Levy?
Sue ATKINS(Trade Unionists and Socialists Against Cuts) | Yes |
Christopher HAMMOND (Labour Party)
Samuel HARRIS (Liberal Democrat)
Clive HILLMAN (Green Party) | In principle I am in favour of the WPL but would need to get up to speed on the current thinking as regards the City’s position. |
Matt JONES (The Conservative Party) | I am in favour of encouraging businesses to grow and prosper in Southampton. New government policies allowing Southampton to keep 100% of any growth in business rates, along with other new funding streams introduced by the government linked to new development, can and should be used in part to improve our cycling infrastructure. I am not yet convinced a WPL would be the best way to fund better cycling in Southampton. |
