Questions for Swaythling ward candidates (6 questions)
Question 1
If elected will you sign up to the Space for Cycling campaign?
Paul CLARKE (Liberal Democrat)
Angela COTTON (Green Party) | Yes |
Lorna FIELKER (Labour Party) | I support the aims of the campaign and will sign up – but know there are many challenges to implementing everything that is needed to create more space for safe cycling. |
Bob PAINTON (The Conservative Party) | Yes |
Question 2
Are you in favour of removing road space for cars and using this for safe segregated cycle superhighways similar to London?
Paul CLARKE (Liberal Democrat)
Angela COTTON (Green Party) | Yes |
Lorna FIELKER (Labour Party) | I am and I am aware that Labour in Southampton are looking at ways to improve our highways and are working with cycling groups in the city to achieve this. |
Bob PAINTON (The Conservative Party) | No |
Question 3
Are you in favour of lowering speed limits to 20mph in some residential areas to make it safer for people to walk and cycle?
Paul CLARKE (Liberal Democrat)
Angela COTTON (Green Party) | Yes |
Lorna FIELKER (Labour Party) | Police don’t have the resources to enforce this, and have greater calls in relation to public safety on what they have. Without enforcement it’s pointless. However, as a nervous cyclist it is something I would like to see if the police get properly funded in the future. |
Bob PAINTON (The Conservative Party) | Yes |
Question 4
If elected what would you do to encourage cycling in Southampton?
Paul CLARKE (Liberal Democrat)
Angela COTTON (Green Party) | Ensure cycle infrastructure is created as per the cycling strategy and that existing routes are maintained properly. Ensure all new developments in the city contribute to, or at very least do not impede, the development of safe and efficient routes for cycling around the city. Work with employers, colleges and schools to encourage staff and student to cycle |
Lorna FIELKER (Labour Party) | I’m too nervous to cycle on the roads. I would consider attending and promoting cycle awareness classes if I would get to the point where I could cycle one handed and look over my shoulder |
Bob PAINTON (The Conservative Party) | Ensure more effective cycleways are opened up to make it safe for cyclists and pedestrians alike. |
Question 5
If elected would you be in favour of allocating 10% of the local transport budget to cycling?
Paul CLARKE (Liberal Democrat)
Angela COTTON (Green Party) | Yes |
Lorna FIELKER (Labour Party) | I am |
Bob PAINTON (The Conservative Party) | Yes |
Question 6
If elected would you be in favour of a Workplace Parking Levy?
Paul CLARKE (Liberal Democrat)
Angela COTTON (Green Party) | Yes |
Lorna FIELKER (Labour Party) | Yes |
Bob PAINTON (The Conservative Party) | No, unfortunately Southampton doesn’t currently have an infrastructure in place to stop employees taking their cars to work and many come from outside the city. |
