Question 3

Are you in favour of lowering speed limits to 20mph in some residential areas to make it safer for people to walk and cycle?

Vijay CHOPRA (Liberal Democrat)
Toqeer KATARIA (Labour Party) As policy this is not something we support. We look at individual hotpots but the trial showed no reduction in speed. The police do not have resources to enforce. Without enforcement it’s not worth doing.
Diana GALTON (The Conservative Party)
Ronald MELDRUM (Green Party) Generally yes, but not where it would cause more air pollution.

Question 4

If elected what would you do to encourage cycling in Southampton?

Vijay CHOPRA (Liberal Democrat)

Work with groups to get message out to people on benefits of cycling, both health and environment.
Diana GALTON (The Conservative Party)
Ronald MELDRUM (Green Party) Cycle myself to all meetings and encourage others to do so.

Question 5

If elected would you be in favour of allocating 10% of the local transport budget to cycling?

Vijay CHOPRA (Liberal Democrat)
Toqeer KATARIA (Labour Party) Every year we have spent more than 10% of transport budget on cycling. This year Council spent a 3rd of the budget but this was due to grants. In normal year 2.12m is the highways budget, for nonespecific highways of which we speed between 500-600k.
Diana GALTON (The Conservative Party)
Ronald MELDRUM (Green Party) Certainly in favour of diverting funfs for cycling.
