What experience do you have of cycling in the Southampton area?

We believe that 20mph should be the norm for local streets in residential areas (as distinct from main connecting roads). 20mph would: greatly encourage walking and cycling; improve the quality of life in an area for residents; and would not delay car journeys significantly (because only the start/end of a journey would be affected). Do you agree that 20mph should become the norm for local streets in Southampton?

John Charles Thomas SPOTTISWOODE (Green Party)	Green Party Councillors have led the way with 20mph speed limits.  Lower speed limits are essential, but Greens are calling for more.  We want full-blown Safe Routes to School programmes everywhere, which involves a more comprehensive approach to keeping school children safe.

John Charles Thomas SPOTTISWOODE (Green Party)	Encouraging people like the Sky Riders to cycle regularly in the city is quite complex.  It is mainly about the provision of safe cycle routes and information about these.  Too many cycle routes in the city are simple disjointed yellow lines on the roads, with cars often parked in the way.

John Charles Thomas SPOTTISWOODE (Green Party)	In Southampton we have bad air quality, affecting all of us and shortening the lives of many.  It is a major issue.  Whatever we can do to reduce polluting traffic levels needs to be done.  Active travel (walking and cycling) is a key part of this.  The Green Party reverses the travel hierarchy of other political Parties.  We put walking and cycling as top priorities, then things like the railways and buses, and then private cars.

London’s Mayor has launched plans for proper prioritisation of space for cycling in London, with a 15-mile substantially-segregated route by removing traffic lanes from cars, three ‘mini-Hollands’ and more. Would you and your party support a new London-style bike plan for Southampton?

John Charles Thomas SPOTTISWOODE (Green Party)	The so-called Boris bikes in London were in fact a Green Party initiative and the Green Party in London have been in the forefront all along of moves to get more bike use in the capital.  In Southampton the Green Party similarly is in the forefront, but up to now we have not had the power to do what is necessary.

John Charles Thomas SPOTTISWOODE (Green Party)	The Green Party absolutely do want Dutch-quality cycle provision.  It is a disgrace when new road systems or major road improvements have paltry provision for cyclists, or sometimes nothing of significance at all.  The Green Party very much wants separate cycle tracks provided in all new traffic schemes and these to be seriously considered for modifications to existing schemes.
