# Question 1

What experience do you have of cycling in the Southampton area?

Tara BOSWORTH  (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition)  The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Peter Graham GALTON (Liberal Democrat)  The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Chris GRACE (The Conservative Party)  The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Satvir KAUR (Labour Party) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ricky LAMBERT (Independent) Have cycled on and off over many years in the Southampton area.
Nick RAY (UK Independence Party (UKIP)) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
John Charles Thomas SPOTTISWOODE (Green Party) I have a lot of experience cycling in the Southampton area.  I cycled to work when that was feasible, my wife cycles to the IoW ferry and we both cycle or walk whenever we can.

# Question 2

We believe that 20mph should be the norm for local streets in residential areas (as distinct from main connecting roads). 20mph would: greatly encourage walking and cycling; improve the quality of life in an area for residents; and would not delay car journeys significantly (because only the start/end of a journey would be affected). Do you agree that 20mph should become the norm for local streets in Southampton?

Tara BOSWORTH  (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition)  The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Peter Graham GALTON (Liberal Democrat)  The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Chris GRACE (The Conservative Party)  The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Satvir KAUR (Labour Party) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ricky LAMBERT (Independent) Yes I do.
Nick RAY (UK Independence Party (UKIP)) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
John Charles Thomas SPOTTISWOODE (Green Party)

Green Party Councillors have led the way with 20mph speed limits.  Lower speed limits are essential, but Greens are calling for more.  We want full-blown Safe Routes to School programmes everywhere, which involves a more comprehensive approach to keeping school children safe.

# Question 3

11,000 people took part in last year’s Sky Ride in Southampton. If you are elected what would you do to encourage these same people to cycle regularly in the city.

Ricky LAMBERT (Independent) More advertising and awareness.
Nick RAY (UK Independence Party (UKIP)) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
John Charles Thomas SPOTTISWOODE (Green Party)

Encouraging people like the Sky Riders to cycle regularly in the city is quite complex.  It is mainly about the provision of safe cycle routes and information about these.  Too many cycle routes in the city are simple disjointed yellow lines on the roads, with cars often parked in the way.

# Question 4

How important do you consider the role of active travel (cycling and walking) in improving the air quality in the city and so avoid paying a large fine to the EU.

Ricky LAMBERT (Independent) Very important as for the future of the planet and improving health quality.
Nick RAY (UK Independence Party (UKIP)) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
John Charles Thomas SPOTTISWOODE (Green Party)

In Southampton we have bad air quality, affecting all of us and shortening the lives of many.  It is a major issue.  Whatever we can do to reduce polluting traffic levels needs to be done.  Active travel (walking and cycling) is a key part of this.  The Green Party reverses the travel hierarchy of other political Parties.  We put walking and cycling as top priorities, then things like the railways and buses, and then private cars.

# Question 5

London’s Mayor has launched plans for proper prioritisation of space for cycling in London, with a 15-mile substantially-segregated route by removing traffic lanes from cars, three ‘mini-Hollands’ and more. Would you and your party support a new London-style bike plan for Southampton?

Tara BOSWORTH  (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Peter Graham GALTON (Liberal Democrat) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Chris GRACE (The Conservative Party) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Satvir KAUR (Labour Party) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ricky LAMBERT (Independent) Yes most certainly.
Nick RAY (UK Independence Party (UKIP)) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
John Charles Thomas SPOTTISWOODE (Green Party) The so-called Boris bikes in London were in fact a Green Party initiative and the Green Party in London have been in the forefront all along of moves to get more bike use in the capital.  In Southampton the Green Party similarly is in the forefront, but up to now we have not had the power to do what is necessary.

# Question 6

Do you believe that Dutch-quality cycle provision, with cycle tracks that are separate both from pedestrians and motor traffic and that have priority over side roads should be our aspiration and should a) be included within all new traffic schemes and b) be considered and consulted on for all modifications to existing schemes?

Tara BOSWORTH  (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Peter Graham GALTON (Liberal Democrat) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Chris GRACE (The Conservative Party) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Satvir KAUR (Labour Party) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ricky LAMBERT (Independent) Yes most definitely that appears to me to be the only way forward.
Nick RAY (UK Independence Party (UKIP)) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
John Charles Thomas SPOTTISWOODE (Green Party)

The Green Party absolutely do want Dutch-quality cycle provision.  It is a disgrace when new road systems or major road improvements have paltry provision for cyclists, or sometimes nothing of significance at all.  The Green Party very much wants separate cycle tracks provided in all new traffic schemes and these to be seriously considered for modifications to existing schemes.

# Question 7

Do you support our view that traffic policing, of all groups of road users (cyclists, drivers, etc), should become a greater police priority, and that this should be evidence-based, namely based on the relative levels of danger presented by each such group?

Tara BOSWORTH  (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Peter Graham GALTON (Liberal Democrat) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Chris GRACE (The Conservative Party) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Satvir KAUR (Labour Party) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ricky LAMBERT (Independent) Yes, there needs to be visible policing.
Nick RAY (UK Independence Party (UKIP)) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
John Charles Thomas SPOTTISWOODE (Green Party) Traffic policing should indeed have a greater priority because of the major dangers to cyclists with our current shared use of roads by cyclists and motorists.  Cycles are very vulnerable and it is essential that safety is put foremost and traffic policing is focused on this.

# Question 8

Do you have any other general cycling-related comments or points? And what support have you given for cycling and walking, or sustainable transport more generally, in the recent past?

Tara BOSWORTH  (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Peter Graham GALTON (Liberal Democrat)  The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Chris GRACE (The Conservative Party)  The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Satvir KAUR (Labour Party) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ricky LAMBERT (Independent) Potholes, pavement cyclists wrong, better road maintenance.
Nick RAY (UK Independence Party (UKIP)) The candidate has not responded to the survey.
John Charles Thomas SPOTTISWOODE (Green Party)

The Green Party policy can be seen in our Transport Policy at http://policy.greenparty.org.uk/tr.html.  It is essential that we get more Green Councillors and MPs.  If you agree with our policies, vote Green, or we will never get the changes we want and need.
