Like many others, I have been put off from cycling locally due to safety worries. However, I do not own a car and so walk nearly everywhere, so have a similar carbon footprint! As part of my degree at the University of Southampton, I am currently enrolled on a project to assess the impact of the ‘My Journey’ cycling scheme being carried out by the local city council. This has led me to interview a number of local cyclists, and I have gained an understanding of barriers and issues that residents find when cycling (or not) in the local area. |

We believe that 20mph should be the norm for local streets in residential areas (as distinct from main connecting roads). 20mph would: greatly encourage walking and cycling; improve the quality of life in an area for residents; and would not delay car journeys significantly (because only the start/end of a journey would be affected). I do. I know that the policy has been a success in Brighton, where it was implemented in previously dangerous areas for cyclists throughout the city. Deaths and injuries have decreased, and more people are cycling and walking due to increased road safety. I would love to see a similar transformation locally in Southampton. |

| Rosie Beth PEARCE (Green Party) | I would petition the council to spend more of its funds from the department of transport on better infrastructure for cyclists, to aid its work in building local enthusiasm for cycling. I would support safety initiatives that help cyclists to become more responsible and safer road users. From my research for the local council as part of my degree course, I know that many more people are starting to cycle in Southampton, due to initiatives such as Skyride and My Journey. However, to retain these enthused new cyclists, they need to know how to be safe, and be given every opportunity to stay so, on the road and on paths. |

Having people cycle and walk to destinations rather than using polluting vehicles will contribute to lowering the pollution locally. The CO2 put out by road vehicles accounts for about 1/5 of total UK carbon dioxide emissions, so successfully petitioning residents to swap from driving to walking or cycling will have a significant impact. This is sorely needed in Southampton – as I walk down Portswood road each morning on my way to university, I am reminded of one reason why childhood asthma and respiratory problems are rising – the pollution from all of the cars on the road! Improving air quality not only saves us money by preventing a fine from the EU, but will save lives in Southampton. |

I have lived car-free for my entire duration at university, taking a bus pass last year and choosing to walk almost everywhere this year. Therefore, I have knowledge about sustainable transport and walking locally. As previously mentioned, I chose a pre-dissertation project as part of my degree that focused on cycling, and this has educated me about issues facing local cyclists. These have included (but are not limited to): better cycling paths, better education about the rules of the road for both cyclists and motorists, and more advertising for the ‘bike doctor’ that visits the town centre each week. I know that Bevois, the ward I am standing in representing the Green Party, has the highest levels of cycling in all of Southampton, but would love to encourage the making of even more local cyclists – hopefully, even myself! |
