If elected will you sign up to the Space for Cycling campaign?

| Declan CLUNE (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition) | Yes. As a passionate environmentalist and a newly converted cyclists I strongly believe in and support the Space for Cycling campaign. Currently our city is crossed by what I believe are very dangerous roads for cyclists and designed only for cars and heavy goods. This must change. |

| Nicholas FORD (Green Party) | I will, if elected, lend my support to the Space For Cycling Campaign, since its aims align with or complement Green Party policy, and would continue to do so as long as none of its specific aims conflict specifically with Party policy locally or the expressed wishes of a significant number of the people I as a city councillor, represent. My personal views on the six campaign themes are that they are all worthwhile and laudable, although I do have reservations about a) removing through motor traffic in residential areas – I foresee difficulties in enforcing such a measure without penalising residents, delaying emergency service vehicles or rendering public transport less effective; and b) lower speed limits I would support only in residential areas and off main roads, and assuming that pilot scheme data has compelling evidence for its extension in terms of improved road safety, reduced accidents etc. |

If elected what would you do to encourage cycling in Southampton?
| James BAILLIE (The Conservative Party) | I used to cycle to work, and have loved taking part in events like SkyRide and Cycle the Wight. Part of the reason I enjoyed SkyRide so much is that it was so refreshing to see thousands of people all having fun cycling together. It shows that people are actually keen to cycle, and it shouldn’t take much encouragement to get more cycling regularly. They just need to feel that they, and their families, are safe!
As my children get older I want to be able take them cycling everywhere safely, and if this campaign will help that then I am happy to support it. Thank you for all you do to promote cycling in Southampton. |
| Declan CLUNE (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition) | First and foremost open up dialogue and communication with cyclists and cyclist groups. As a beginning I would look at the 6 themes in the Space for Cycling campaign and work with Southampton Cycling Campaign and other similar groups to make them a reality. This will require working with planners in Southampton and look at other cities around the world where bike friendly planning has been successful. As a recent visitor to Copenhagen and Malmo in Sweden I have seen first hand how much this is possible and the positive effects it can have. Working together is key and I believe it is cyclists who are the experts so are an essential part of the process. |

| Nicholas FORD (Green Party) | If elected I would urge the City Council to promote a sponsored self-service bike-sharing scheme similar to those already operating in London, as well as to resource cycle training in local schools and on the Council’s website, perhaps in co-operation with Hampshire Constabulary. |
