If elected what would you do to encourage cycling in Southampton?

| David FLETCHER (Independent) | I lived in Holland for 10 years and also worked in Germany and Belgium so appreciate how the cycle is linked into the everyday social structure.
I would lobby that city planners should look at the city as a whole and look not only at cars and motor vehicles (which seems to have been the main focus for many years) but also plan in safe pedestrian walkways and protected cycle lanes. I would like to see planned dedicated cycle lanes from the edges of the city right through to the centre. This would allow a family to cycle from their home through to the city centre safely. I would also like the planners to review other possibilities. Is there any reason (except monetary) that a protected cycle track be built on the grass verge along the length of Teboura Way ? Is there any reason why Third Avenue could not be made one way with a protected cycle track using the unused side of the road? I would like to point out that I am not an engineer so no doubt a multitude of reasons why this cannot be done however if there is a will there is a way. All the best with the cycling campaign. |
| Peter GALTON (Liberal Democrat) | If elected I would push the simple fact that we should all be cycling or walking for our own good and every one else. The points that you have raised in your letter are good, but need to look at each area to see what plans would work or not. Also to find ways of raising funds. Get Councils to look at funding as stated in the information that you sent. It was a shame that many years ago we lost the cycle track at the sports centre and we now see how British Cycling has had so many successes since then. I have often thought if it would be possible to put a cycle way around the main pathways on the Common, but I am not sure if this would be possible as it is the Common. |

| John SPOTTISWOODE (Green Party) | We definitely need investment in both infrastructure and road safety enhancements, and in education and public awareness. Part of making a pleasant and green city is to encourage bicycle use as much as possible.
The majority of residential roads and shopping streets can be made safe for cyclists by reducing road speeds to 20mph. Faster roads should have provision for cycle lanes or paths as appropriate to the road, preferably separate from the traffic. In the longer-term, I will push for parallel cycle paths to be built along the main trunk roads from the city centre to the outskirts (e.g. Thomas Lewis Way, Millbrook Road), as this would effectively create direct safe cycle routes from all of the suburbs to the city centre. I support a public information campaign to highlight the benefits of cycling – faster journeys at peak time, no city centre parking charges, the health benefits. |
