If elected what would you do to encourage cycling in Southampton?
| Richard JAMES (Green Party) | If elected, I would try to get future decision and planning for cycling infrastructure to be based upon the advice and opinions of cyclists and cycling groups. I would push for more 20mph limits on residential streets – and to actually have these enforced. While some main routes would be improved with separate cycle lanes, on many minor roads this isn’t practical. I feel most strongly that what is needed in the long term is better education of all road users to respect each other and the rules of the Highway Code. I would also like to see a more long term schemes to encourage cycling. Cycle to work days and bike week get a few extra people out on their bikes, but when the event is over go back to their cars again. One idea would be to challenge a small number of families that live and work in Southampton and do most of their journeys by car to switch over to cycling for one year. They would be loaned good quality bikes to meet their requirements such as carrying children and the shopping. They would get advice and support on planning routes, the bikes would be kept in good order by a trained mechanic and they would get rider training. They would commit to doing all journeys under 5 miles without using the car and keep a diary of their experiences. These experiences would then be publicised. At the end of the year, they would then receive a cash payment or the option to buy, at a discount, the bikes they have had on loan. |
