# Question 2
If elected what would you do to encourage cycling in Southampton?
Stephen BARNES-ANDREWS (Labour Party) | The candidate has not responded to the survey. |
Paul CLARKE (Liberal Democrat) | The candidate has not responded to the survey. |
Felix DAVIES (The Conservative Party) | A response has been submitted on behalf of all Conservative Party candidates by the group spokesperson for Environment and Transport, Councillor Steven Galton. |
Andrew HOWE (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition) | I cycle everywhere in Southampton. There are two things I’d like to see change.Firstly, there are some real problem spots for cycling in the city. I’d like to see more cycle paths and cycle facilities on the most dangerous and difficult roads.Secondly, it can be expensive and difficult to maintain a bike, especially if you are unemployed or on a low income. I’d like to see more workshops and drop-ins, and more publicity for these events. I’m pleased that Sustrans’ Monday night Bike Kitchen has taken off, based down at So Make It, the Southampton Makerspace. It would be great to see more of this sort of thing. I’d like to see the Council subsidising bike maintenance courses. |
Richard John LYONS (UK Independence Party (UKIP)) | A response has been submitted on behalf of UK Independence Party candidates by the branch chairman, Pearline Hingston |
Rosie Beth PEARCE (Green Party) | The city already has a few successful initiatives, including ‘My Journey’ and the annual ‘Skyride’. I would encourage even more publicity of these campaigns, and similar ones, so that people who haven’t considered cycling before might do so.
Evidence from Brighton, where a 20mph limit was applied to areas with heavy pedestrian traffic, shows that fewer cyclists are injured where these limits are applied; so I would encourage their adoption within Southampton. I would pressure the local council to improve links to the town centre from all over the city, particularly under-maintained cycle paths like the one from Redhill to town. Bevois currently has the highest rates of cycling in Southampton, and, if elected, I will do my upmost to serve the ever-increasing number cyclists of Bevois and the wider city.valuable and I’d be honoured to be involved. |
