Campaign Ride: Brummell Bummel – Sunday 20th May
Please find below details for the Brummell Bummel, to be held this year on Sunday 20th May in memory of Mark Brummell and Kieran Dix, both killed at Ipley Cross by drivers who “didn’t see them”. Let us make this both a remembrance of their tragic and unnecessary deaths and a celebration of their lives.
Assemble: the Ship Inn, Old Redbridge Village at 10 am We won’t leave straight away as there is likely to be an Echo reporter wanting a photo and interview.
Coffee: the Bold Forester at 11 am
Ipley Cross: we will arrive here at 12 noon and stop for approximately 30 minutes to remember cyclists killed at this location and give tributes to them, and to look at the “improvements” made to the junction.
Route from Ipley Cross to lunch stop in Woodlands: Beaulieu Rd to Lyndhurst, walk through the Modena garage to The Custards, Pikes Hill to Emery Down, continuing north along Forest Rd to the junction with the lane to Minstead, The Grove, School Lane, Seamans Lane then east to cross the A337 to join Beechwood Rd, Chineham Rd, Bourne Rd, Paradise Lane, Rossiters Lane. Woodlands Lane.
Lunch at Spot in the Woods: arrival time between 1.30 and 2 pm. Leave between 3 and 3.30 pm
Route from Woodlands back to the Ship Inn: loop on Forest tracks (Costicles Inclosure) from Woodlands Lane to Fletchwood Lane, Ashurst Bridge Rd, through park, Rushington Lane, Frampton Way, Rumbridge St, Redbridge Causeway. Predicted return time between 4 and 4.30 pm.
Please note: if weather inclemment, this route is very easily shortened and route from the lunch stop to Redbridge is familiar to most so anyone who needs to leave early can do so.
All bikes are suitable except for the Forest track but this can be omitted by those on road bikes. Terrain is fairly flat for most of the route but some hills around Lyndhurst and Minstead and Eling Hill near the beginning of the ride. Distance approximately 30 miles.
Shorter route: a shorter route for those who would like to join us but for whom 30 miles is too far: 12.35 pm train from Southampton to arrive at Beaulieu Rd Station at 13.50 pm ( we would meet you here at this time); return 15.43 train from Ashurst station to arrive at Southampton Central at 15.55 pm. Variation on this are possible.
