Sun 20th August OFF ROAD TO WINCHESTER

On Sunday 20th August there will be a Campaign ride to Winchester using an off-road route for most of the way.

Start: Lakeside cafe, Doncaster Drove, Eastleigh from 9.45 am for 10 am departure.

Route:  Stoneham Lane, Magpie Lane, Flemming Park, Oakmount Ave, off-road to Boyatt Lane, Otterbourne, Otterbourne Rd, Poles Lane, Silkstead Lane (bridleway) to Olivers Battery, Compton Way, under Badger Farm Rd , shared path all the way to Stanmore Lane and St Cross.

Coffee and light lunch at the Queen in Kingsgate Rd.  Two possible return routes (to be decided on the day):  1)  via Pilgrims Way from St Catherine’s Hill  2) via NCN route to Shawford, Shawford Rd to Twyford then Watley Lane.  Both of these routes join Hensting Lane, then Nob’s Crook, Church Lane, Bishopstoke Lane, Bishopstoke Rd (shared path) Eastleigh town centre and Desborough Rd back to Lakeside.

Terrain:  mixture of off-road paths, bridleways, quiet roads, approx one mile on Poles Lane (busy during the week as it is a route to Hursley, not so busy at weekends); bridleways are fairly rough so not suitable for road bikes; hybrids and mountain bikes fine.

Timings:  approx 2 hours to Winchester (St Cross);  2 hrs return.  Coffee/lunch stop 12 noon – 1 pm; return to Lakeside approx 3 pm.  An extra half-hour if folks wish to park their bikes (there is secure parking) and climb St Catherine’s Hill.

Weather:  forecast says sunny all day!

We attempted this route in Bike Week but I had not had time to recce the route (owing to the general election).  I have now ridden the route and corrected the mistakes we made.  It is an excellent and very enjoyable off-road route to Winchester and back.

Please email me if you think you will be coming so that I can give pub advance notice if we are a large group.  If you prefer to bring sandwiches, that’s fine – you can have a picnic on St Catherine’s Hill instead.
