WHAT’S THIS ALL ABOUT?
The world naked bike ride is a worldwide environmental protest against the destructive elements of car culture and a celebration of the bicycle and the body. By cycling naked we show the vulnerability of cyclists on city streets. We aim to promote cycling as a sensible and fun means of transport and demand practical changes to make cycling a safer alternative to car travel.
DO I HAVE TO RIDE NUDE?
No nudity is optional. Many ride nude, but others wear swimsuits, shorts or fancy dress. Why not get creative with body paint or decorate your bike? Some people disguise themselves with wigs or silly glasses. It’s “go as bare as you dare!” You’ll be in good company with people of all ages, shapes and sizes. The police have no problem with the ride and we get smiles and cheers from the public as we go past.
The Art House (178 Above Bar) has once again very kindly agreed to host a body painting session from 4pm. Bring your own paints, stencils and ideas!
WHY RIDE IN 2012?
This has been a momentous year for cycling. The Times campaign (http://goo.gl/6xtVN) has brought unprecedented attention to cycling safety. The campaign quite rightly recognises that cycling is a fundamentally healthy form of transport with enormous benefits to society. At the same time, poor infrastructure, certain HGVs and a reckless minority of drivers put cyclists in serious danger. We believe these dangers are avoidable, and the World Naked Bike Ride campaigns alongside other cycling activists for investment in improved infrastructure and cyclist-friendly measures.
FOLLOW THE HIGHWAY CODE
Please ensure your bike is road-worthy, observe the rules of the road, stopping at red lights and giving way as required at junctions. Please follow this instruction for your own safety and to avoid antagonising non-cyclists. There are several regrouping points on the ride in case the ride gets separated.
