Sunday 20th MayBrummell Bummel

Please find below details for the Brummell Bummel, to be held this year on Sunday 20th May in memory of Mark Brummell and Kieran Dix, both killed at Ipley Cross by drivers who “didn’t see them”.   Let us make this both a remembrance of their tragic and unnecessary deaths and a celebration of their lives.

Assemble: the Ship Inn, Old Redbridge Village at 10 am  We won’t leave straight away as there is likely to be an Echo reporter wanting a photo and interview.

Coffee: the Bold Forester at 11 am

Ipley Cross: we will arrive here at 12 noon and stop for approximately 30 minutes to remember cyclists killed at this location and give tributes to them, and to look at the “improvements” made to the junction.

Route from Ipley Cross to lunch stop in Woodlands: Beaulieu Rd to Lyndhurst, walk through the Modena garage to The Custards, Pikes Hill to Emery Down, continuing north along Forest Rd to the junction with the lane to Minstead, The Grove, School Lane, Seamans Lane then east to cross the A337 to join Beechwood Rd, Chineham Rd, Bourne Rd, Paradise Lane, Rossiters Lane. Woodlands Lane.

Lunch at Spot in the Woods: arrival time between 1.30 and 2 pm.  Leave between 3 and 3.30 pm

Route from Woodlands back to the Ship Inn: loop on Forest tracks (Costicles Inclosure) from Woodlands Lane to  Fletchwood Lane, Ashurst Bridge Rd, through park, Rushington Lane, Frampton Way, Rumbridge St, Redbridge Causeway.  Predicted return time between 4 and 4.30 pm.

Please note:  if weather inclemment, this route is very easily shortened and route from the lunch stop to Redbridge is familiar to most so anyone who needs to leave early can do so.

All bikes are suitable except for the Forest track but this can be omitted by those on road bikes.   Terrain is fairly flat for most of the route but some hills around Lyndhurst and Minstead and Eling Hill near the beginning of the ride.  Distance approximately 30 miles.

Shorter route: a shorter route for those who would like to join us but for whom 30 miles is too far:   12.35 pm train from  Southampton to arrive at Beaulieu Rd Station at 13.50 pm ( we would meet you here at this time);  return  15.43  train from Ashurst station to arrive at Southampton Central at 15.55 pm.  Variation on this are possible.

  1. Wayne Palmer says:

Hi, can anyone advise if off road tyres will be required for the wheels around Winchester ride on the 5th October please.

  2. dht says:

    @Wayne Palmer
    Hi Wayne,
The ride leader recommends hybrid or mountain bikes. So wider tyres with some tread would be best, but no need for suspension forks. Not suitable for road bikes with narrow tyres.

  3. Emily says:

I have not cycled with this group before, is there anything I have to register to or can I just turn up on they day of one of the events?

    Thanks, Emily

  4. dht says:

    Hi Emily,
No registration required, just turn up at the start location/time.

  5. eleanor says:

Hi, can u tell me where the meeting point is as I don’t know the Riverside park? Can u give a brief description of the route as I’m not good with very steep hills! thx E

  6. Peter Court says:

Where does the BRUMMEL BUMMEL start and finish, please? Distance? On road or off road?

  7. dht says:

The details of this year’s Brummel Bummel are yet to finalised. It’s likely to be a new route; possibly the Test valley, as it was a favoured cycling area for Mark. There is a Campaign meeting on Monday where we hope to make a final decision and the website will be updated soon after.

  8. Nigel says:

    Any further news?
CTC has already announced this ride to Kings Somborne but I’d prefer to cycle the SCC version. Is it going to Kings Somborne? Where/when is the start?

  9. dht says:

    Hi Nigel,
Information about the Brummel Bummel is now available on the Southampton Cycling Campaign website.

  10. reena says:

hi – the ride on the 15th meeting at cowheards – how long is it? Not sure if I can keep up as i am not very fast or experienced.

  11. dht says:

The ride leader is very experienced and the group will all cycle together, nobody will be left behind. The ride should be less than 15 miles. If you email Lindsi Bluemel ( then she will be able to give you more detailed information about the ride.

  12. Morny says:

When next the upcoming riding campaign is about to happen! Could you please let me know? I missed both the above mentioned dates to join in for cycle ride.

Although I’ve bike ride around MANOR FARM COUNTRY PARK before, but riding with campaigners is a great fun.

  13. Lyn Brayshaw says:

Cargo/family bike rides coming up – Sat 21st Jan, then 21st or 23rd Feb (half term)…and monthly. See f b Southampton Cargo Bicycles. All welcome!
