World Naked Bike Ride comes to Southampton

Friday 8th June 2007 6pm (for 6.30pm departure) at North end of Southampton Common meeting in the clearing next to Highfield Road and opposite the junction with Omdurman Road. It's also close to the pedestrian underpass if you are approaching from the western side of the Common. There is plenty of space here for a REALLY BIG RIDE to congregate. Here's a google map showing the location. There will be an opportunity for body-painting and decorating of bikes. If you have roller blades, skateboards or other (non-carbon emitting) wheels feel free to use them. The ride will take about an hour most likely.

What's this World Naked Bike Ride all about?
A peaceful, imaginative and fun protest against oil dependency and car culture. A celebration of the bicycle (and skates! and unicycles!) and also a celebration of the power and individuality of the human body. A symbol of the vulnerability of the cyclist in traffic. The world's biggest naked protest: 50+ cities and thousands of riders participate worldwide, including more than 1000 in the UK in 2006.

Southampton ride details
We will meet at the north end of Southampton Common at a location to be confirmed at 6pm on Friday 8th June 2007. There will be time to decorate bikes and paint slogans on our bodies, then we will set off for a ride of around 5 or 6 miles. The exact route has yet to be confirmed, but will definitely include tour of the City Centre! We will move at a gentle pace to ensure everyone stays together. Expect the ride to take about an hour.
